How Chris Paul Is Leveraging His Time at Home to ‘Train’ His Son in Basketball

Although Chris Paul is eager to return to professional basketball, he is currently spending his time at home with his family mentoring his son Chris Jr. to improve his own court techniques.

“My son is an avid fan of the game.” Paul, 35, tells PEOPLE that his eleven-year-old offspring “absolutely adores it.” “He has complete knowledge of every player and every team.” Additionally, this quarantine has enabled me to accomplish something I have never been able to do before: train him myself.

“Presumably, yesterday marked our fourth day of exercise together, given that he informed me of his intention to exercise on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. “Therefore, it’s ironic that our most productive day was yesterday, given that he was furious and upset the other three days,” the point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder continues. “It was really cool yesterday and probably one of the best feelings that I’ve had during this entire quarantine.”

Amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Paul and his family—including his wife Jada Paul and their children, son Chris Jr. and daughter Camryn, 7 and a half—have maintained an active lifestyle in addition to basketball. However, they have continued to maintain a social distance.

The athlete states, “We are fortunate to have a weight room with weights and a treadmill.” “What I try to do is come up with a circuit for my kids, whether that be they have to jump on the bike for 2 minutes, then get down and do some push-ups, then do some sit-ups, then run a few sprints.”

“I believe they take pleasure in that. Paul elaborates, “I also try to get them to complete three circuits, because if they see [my wife and I] training, it inspires and motivates them to get going as well.”According to the father of two who spoke to PEOPLE, “the funniest part” of the experience was “watching my daughter come downstairs in her workout attire.” “I believe I am not yet accustomed to that.”Regarding Camryn, Paul states that his youngest child “becomes extremely restless” during activities such as Zoom calls; therefore, Jada will occasionally instruct her to “run a lap” around the pool outside in order to expend excess energy during school hours.”When the school day’s over, then usually we all try to get together and work out,” he elaborates. “I think that’s been one of the coolest things … most of the time I’m gone or I’m somewhere at the gym working out or training, but because of this situation, we’ve had an opportunity to have family workouts where we all work out together.”

After spending the last couple of months in isolation, the basketball icon claims that his family life at home is operating like “a well-oiled machine” — largely due to Jada, 36.”During the initial two weeks, I made every effort to assist with numeracy and physical education. “However, my wife has been phenomenal, given that I’ve been on the receiving end of countless phone calls every day as the president of the union,” Paul tells PEOPLE.”So in between my calls, I go up there and check in on Spanish or what’s going on as far as school, and I can look at my wife’s face and tell that her calling was not to be a teacher,” he acknowledges. “She does the absolute best she can, but … it might be that she could be a teacher, just probably not with our kids.”
